I have a lot to reflect about this field trip to 3M. Actually, I felt guilty after this visit because prior to this trip, I did not have any idea of and have not heard of 3M. However after this enriching experience, I realized that 3M is one of the largest Multinational-Corporations, with its roots spread all around the world, and it is a leading innovation centre only rivaled by world-renowned giants Apple and Google. I am surprised at the importance of innovation in this company as it invests billions of dollars every year into research and development --- all in a bid to uncover and develop new products that benefits the customer, and simultaneously, sustaining its colossal size.
I want to especially thank the 3M staff for taking time off their busy schedule to make this visit memorable and enriching for all of us. The trip was very engaging, and many of our doubts and questions were answered readily by the staff. With such friendly employees here, I would really want to work here in the future!
From this trip, I have come to realise that business is never a bed of roses, never a smooth voyage, and never a smooth flight. 3M has encountered a myriad of failures and difficulties throughout its hundred years of history; yet it stands robust and sturdy today. I was astounded by the fact that thousands of their products fail yearly. Yet, due to their innovative nature and with the strong spirit of perserverence, the company has been able to turn the difficulties into new opportunities for development--- effectively tilting the playing field in their favour, and thus allowing them to embrace crises without crumbling. I think this is what we all have to learn to be successful in life. 3M did not rise up the global market through mere luck; 3M did it through perserverence and innovation. 3M is indeed a perfect example for all to appreciate and emulate.
From this trip, I was lucky to see science concepts at work in the company. (At least there is some application of what we are learning in school) Concepts like hypotheses and experimentation are especially prominent in the research sector.
In all, I have benefitted much through this visit (especially with a new outlook on life). Thank you 3M for giving us the opportunity to visit your firms, and I staunchly believe that my juniors will benefit in the future as well.
